Gamma Knife Icon

The Gamma Knife Icon is the 6th generation of the Leksell Gamma Knife family and is considered as the most accurate, flexible, and the safest among its predecessors.

Gamma knife is a stereotactic intracranial radiosurgery technique applied in treating of brain tumors and other brain abnormalities as part of radiation therapy.  In gamma knife radiosurgery, the targeted tissues receive a very high dose of radiation in a single session, while the adjacent brain tissues are exposed to only an insignificant dose of radiation.  The objective of the procedure is to stop the growth of the tumor.

There are many advantages that gamma knife treatment provides for patients with brain tumors or other brain abnormalities, such as;

  • Elimination of open surgery for many types of brain tumors
  • General anesthesia is not required
  • No incisions are made on the scalp or head
  • Healthy brain tissues are exposed to very low levels of radiation
  • No need for cutting of hair prior to procedure
  • No hair loss occurrence due to the procedure
  • No recovery period; patients can return home or work on the day of the treatment

A wide array of diseases can be treated with use of the gamma knife, such as;

Patients with Benign Brain Tumors

  • Vestibular Schwannomas (Acoustic Neuromas)
  • Meningiomas
  • Pituitary Adenomas
  • Skull Base Tumors
